Just north of the "hot pad" at Nellis
AFB, Nevada, blending
to inconspicuousness into the surrounding terrain, lies this
strange assemblage of buildings, security fencing, and bizarre
John Lear claims that the
area was suddenly and mysteriously
changed "almost overnight" from a U.S. Navy facility to one
having no identifying marks. Inquiries to the Nellis AFB
Public Information Office (PIO) resulted in a "no comment"
response as to both its identity and purpose.
I then telephoned
the PIO and asked the sergeant who
answered the telephone to take several steps outside his office
(having a map of the base helps!) and look to the north west,
just past the end of the runway. There he would see a water
tower. The water tower is located in the area I was asking
about, I said.
He not only refused to honor this
simple request, he hung up
the telephone while muttering something akin to, "Damned
UFO nut." Strangely enough, I had made no mention of my
proclivity toward UFO research.
A recent map shows that the area
is a federal prison, yet
there is no listing for it in the Bureau of Prisons list.
What about this mysterious area?
Is there any evidence
to support either an adjunct to Nellis, a federal prison,
or serves in some other capacity for some other government
Being that I am a curious fellow, I wanted to know what
this was. So I contacted some of my more adventurous
friends and headed out for an adventure-filled afternoon.
The trip up to the front gate was fruitless, and resulted
in a stern-faced, armed guard politely (yet firmly)
demanding that we leave. We returned from whence we
came (about 300 yards away) and hauled out the binoculars
and cameras. Long lenses were in order now! After a
brief flurry of tripods, sandbags, and 50-power binoculars,
we were ready!
