| Introduction
to the Antioch Weekend
|
This manual was written to provide help for those who are working with
the Antioch Weekend on the campuses where it is being used. Now that the
manual is printed up and freely available, we would like to make some general
points clear.
1. There is much more to a successful apostolic movement on campus than putting on a good Weekend. There is more to the success of the Antioch Weekend than just putting on the Weekend itself. The Antioch Weekend is only designed to be a small part of an overall apostolic effort. For growth in Christianity, a continued participation in some sort of follow-through program is more important than making an Antioch Weekend. Do not bother putting on an Antioch Weekend without also forming a follow-through program. The Weekend itself is only designed to be an initiation into a program. This book only contains materials for a Weekend. Another book will be published which will contain helps for an overall campus effort. 2. Not everything is contained in this book. It is true, all the practical details of putting on a Weekend are in this book. But there is more to an Antioch Weekend than just the structure of it. There is a spirit and a dedication which can only be understood by experience. Therefore, we recommend that only those who have experienced a genuine Antioch Weekend can make use of this book. 3. The Antioch Weekend is not easy to put on. Having a manual like this can be deceptive, because it contains so many materials that putting on the Weekend seems easy. But having an effective Antioch Weekend demands real formation for the leaders. They must have a real dedication to Christ, spiritual stability, and apostolic experience. They should be living the message of the Weekend. It would be a great mistake to begin with or make use of people who are not committed to or have not lived the message of the Weekend. We request that no one use the name "Antioch Weekend" without receiving approval from the committee for the Antioch Weekend (c/o Fr. Charles Harris, C.S.C., or Mr. Steven Clark, St. Mary's Chapel, 331 Thompson St., Ann Arbor, Mich. 48108.) The Manual has three parts. The prologue ("What is the Antioch Weekend') is a general description of the Weekend for those who know little about it. This section was originally printed up to send to people who had no experience with the Weekend, but wanted information about it. The first section contains the materials that should be read by everyone who is working on the Weekend. The second section contains all talk outlines, and guides for the leader, spiritual director, janitor and all those in charge of organizing the Weekend. Only one or two people each Weekend will make use of each of these materials. If you are working on the Weekend, begin reading all of Section I. Then find the parts of Section II you need, and read those. |
