Apsny / Abkhazia

See the other tables from the former Soviet Union, especially that for Georgia. Georgian is transliterated directly from the Georgian script insted of through Russian Cyrillic which usually happens with Georgian names. The ASR system is used in transliterations, so diacritic signs can be rendered. Some places in Abkhazia have been actually renamed (Candrips<, Gec<rips<) but the new names are probably not recognized by the authorities in T'bilisi. Exact Abkhaz spellings of the names are not known.

Abkhazia Capital: Sukhumi. Formerly an autonomous region, now, de facto, independent. Autonomy was abolished by Georgia after the independence. The Abkhaz rebelled, proclaiming independence and now control much of the territory. Before the war with Georgia, the population was 537,000, of which 100,000 were Abkhaz (17.1%), Georgian 43.9%, and Russians 16.4%.
