Attack on GeoNative

During the second half of July 1997, a Basque political independentist site, Euskal Herria Journal (EHJ), hosted by an American non-profit Internet organization (IGC), was under mail-bomb assault and IGC was forced to close it. The attack was promoted by the main Spanish media, the daily newspaper El Pais.
This was in relation to a recent kidnap and killing (July 12th) of a town council member in the Basque Country, by ETA, the armed basque organization.

This campaign of political censorship against Basque freedom of speech, was accompanied by a complementary attack on many Basque sites, particularly on Basque-language sites which spanish atackers cannot understand. One of the reasons for that is that when Spanish media published EHJs URL, they gave one particular page of it, not the main index page. That page was the Basque Resources Link page, which featured lots of links.

The mainstream spanish newspaper El Pais published that there they were the pages that "ETA and pro-ETA" groups used to spread their "terrorist gospel". GeoNative was in that list.
Now you know what GeoNative is about. You can judge by yourself. We would rather think that the attackers are Spanish monoglots who do not even understand english. Otherwise we must believe that these Spanish attackers not only hate Basques but all other minorities as well.
Other basque-language sites attacked: Jalgi Hadi (a personal homepage), EHE (pro-language association), EHNE (an peasants union), Txatxarro (anti-militarist site), Santamariñe (a local magazine), Egunkaria (the only basque-language daily paper)...
This attack on Basque-language websites needs to be denounced. In a moment when a minority culture, with such an endangered language, tries to get to this new forum of Internet to spread also our language and our culture there, we get attacked just because we are Basque and we write in Basque... We can only label this a nazi-style racist form of censorship.

Besides these attacks, GeoNative receives mostly friendly post in English, Basque and also in other minority languages. We have taken legal actions against the identified attackers of GeoNative. Also to identify the anonimous messages, sending court requests to their Internet service providers.
