Quiché

K'iche' or Quiche, the main native language of Guatemala. There were some 925.000 speakers in 1995. The most famous work of Native American literature, the Popol Vuh of the Maya, was written in K'iche' shortly after the Spanish conquest.

Ixil

Ixil, 71.000 speakers in 1995. The Ixil live in Quiche department. There are three dialects (Chajul, Cotzal, Nebaj). The Awakateko language is close to Ixil.

The Kekchí or Q'eqchi' (proper spelling according to Maya ortography) live in several departments in Guatemala: Alta Verapaz, Petén, Quiché and Izabal. There are also Q'eqchi' in Belize and in El Salvador. Speakers: 335,800 in Guatemala (1990 SIL); 15,000 in Belize (1991 census); 12,286 in El Salvador (1987); 363,000 total.

Some 80.000 people speak Tzutuhil or Tz'utujil (proper spelling) in Guatemala, in a region south of Lake Atitlán, in Southern Guatemala. This language is quite close to K'iche'.
