Ojibwe

The Ojibwe live around the Great Lakes in Canada and the US. Two Ojibwe dialects or languages are spoken. Eastern (8.000 speakers out of 25,000 ethnic ojibwes) and Western (35,000 total speakers out of 60,000 population). It is an Algonquian language. They call themselves Anishinabe or Anishinaabe, and their language is Anishinaabemowin.

Algonquin

A group of natives from Quebec are known under the term Algonquin (not to be confused with Algonquian, which designates the language family). They are, in fact, speakers of a variant of Ojibwe, and they call themselves Anicinâbe. They are some 4,700 speakers in Quebec, in Abitibi and Temiscamingue regions.

Menominee

The Menominee or Omaehnominniwuk (wild rice gatherers) were an Algonquian-speaking people occupying much of what is today Wisconsin. Some 4,000 Menominee live there still, but their language is dead. There were 8 speakers left in 1977.

Fox, Mesquakie, Sauk

Mesquakie or Fox (from the native form Meshkwahkihaki, Red Earth People) is one of the names given to the language shared bay the Sac (also called Sauk, native form Asakiwaki ) and Fox people. These Algonquian speaking peoples lived by Lake Michigan, but were later displaced. Now they live in reservations in Iowa, the Kansas-Nebraska border and central Oklahoma. There were 673 speakers in the census of 1990, in a population of some 3,000 people.

Mesquakie edo Fox hizkuntza, da Fox (ingelesez 'azeriak', baina jatorriz Meshkwahkihaki, 'Lur Gorriko Herria') eta Sauk (Baita ere Sac; jatorriz Asakiwaki ) herrien mintzaira.
