It was the feast of the Antrics at the king's palace. The damsels of the square table were seated at their table with the king and his daughter. On Antrics day, the people traditionally feasted and shared stories.
"Your majesty, someone is here to see you," a servant announced with a bow.
"Bring him here at once," commanded the king. The servant bowed again and left. He returned shortly accompanied by a cloaked figure. "Be seated and feast with us," the king welcomed cordially.
"I cannot. I've come for help," said the cloaked figure in a gruff voice.
"Daddy, its uncle Berrly !" The princess's eyes lit up.
"Indeed it is. But do be quiet Cicely. What is it you need, Sir Berrly ?"
"It is private and I wish to speak with you alone," replied Sir Berrly.
"We can go to my chamber. Come..." The king strode out of the room with Sir Berrly.
"Why can't I go too?" Cicely whined and stamped her foot.
"Don't act like a child, you're almost twelve," scolded a damsel. Just then a cry rose up from the king's chambers.
"Daddy !" Cicely screamed. She jumped up and raced to her father.
In her fathers chamber, Cicely grabbed a sword and crept cautiously around the room. Then she beheld the corpse of her father. She looked up just in time to see a familiar figure jump out of the window. It was an evil lord named Merral. She swore revenge.
After one year of practicing her skills at sword, spear, bow and arrow, Cicely set off for Merral's castle.
When Cicely arrived there, it was under seige. Finding a vine on the opposite side of the castle, and with her bow and arrows slung over her shoulder, her sword on her belt, she climbe up the wall.
When she reached the top, she climbed down the ladder and into the great hall, where she found Merral sitting at his table surrounded by food. "Your time is up, Merral !" growled Cicely.
"Oh. so you have finally come. Did your nurses not let you come sooner ?" laughed Merral.
"I have come to avenge the death of my dear father," cried Cicely and unsheathed her sword.
Five guards surrounded her. "Afraid to fight a female by yourself ?" Cicely mocked.
"Of course not. Guards stop !" retorted Merral.
Mad with rage, he charged blindly at her blade and to his death.
Cicely was welcomed home as heroine.
I answered the phone.
“Hi, I need to talk to David,"
“One sec...Dad !”
“Hello..” dad’s voice trailed off. I couldn’t hear much. My dad, David was an archaeologist and always doing interesting things. I was curious to know who the man with the gruff voice was and what he wanted. Dad hung up.
“Time for bed Izzie !” Mom called.
“Who phoned, dad ?” I queried.
“Go to bed,” dad said sternly. He turned to mom, “Alinna, we need to talk.” I muttered something and stormed upstairs to my attic bedroom.
When I had changed and was curled up in bed, I took out my diary and wrote:
June 23, 1955
Dear diary,
I know that dad has something important to tell mom. I really want to know. I think it’s something about Egypt.
Izzie
A few weeks later David and me were in Egypt studying the carvings by the great pyramids. My mom didn’t go because she said it wasn’t her type of adventure. On a wall I found some hieroglyphics. It translated:
Whoever enters this chamber first will die.
I had brought my book about hieroglyphics. When I warned my dad, he tried to reassure me. “They probably wrote that to scare off robbers and thieves. I knew there was danger, but every time I opened my mouth to protest, he laughed it off.
The team had discovered the entrance and the next day my father was to lead them inside. That night I flopped onto my bed at the hotel and wrote in my diary:
July 10, 1955
Dear diary,
I am so mad my dad won’t listen to me when I warn him about the curse. by tomorrow he will be dead ! I have to do something to save him. I must prove to him that it’s true. But what shall I do ?
Izzie
That night I couldn’t sleep. I tossed and turned all night.
The next day I went with my dad to the pyramid, not to watch him die, but determined to something brave to stop him. Just as he was about to enter the chamber, I rushed ahead of him announcing, “I’m going in first to find the treasure !” The members of the team laughed but my dad let me go in. We found a huge heap of jewels which I helped them to tag and load to take to the museum. Next week, we returned home. Nothing had happened to me. I hadn’t died. The curse wasn’t true after all.
A few weeks later, I was in the hospital under intensive care with an unknown disease. When my dad came to visit me, he apologized, “I’m sorry I didn’t believe you. It’s all my fault.” Tears streamed down his cheeks. He thought I was going to die in place of him. “It wasn’t your fault dad,” I whispered.
No one knew why I was sick. They never found out, but one year later I was half well. I would be like that for the rest of my life.
Chapter 1. Slaves
“That was the first whippn' I ever had," wailed Izzie as the black slaves lined up for their food.
“Don’t worry, it’ll be okay.” Marose tried to comfort Izzie.
Marose and Izzie were black slaves. They worked for Massa Sheaven in Tennessee. Sheaven liked to whip his slaves.
“Be quiet or I’ll whip you both !” growled Massa Sheaven.
That night Izzie and Marose lay in the slave cabin whispering to each other about Canada and how they would be free from slavery if they could only get to Canada. In the morning, they went to work in the cotton fields. They daren’t speak because of Izzie’s whipping that had occurred the day before.
Chapter 2. The escape
That evening Marose and Izzie talked to each other about Canada again. “Somehow we’re gonna escape Izzie. I know it,” Marose murmured.
“Save up your food Marose, I’ll do the same,” whispered Izzie, “so we can have somethin’ to eat on our journey.”
One evening as Marose and Izzie walked to the cabin, Marose noticed something white lying on the ground. “There’s somethin’ on the ground, “ said Marose.
Izzie saw it too and picked it up. “It’s a map ! Maybe it’ll help us to find Canada,” said Izzie hopefully.
As they sat in their cabin that night, Marose and Izzie mapped out a way to get to Canada. Then they slipped silently out of the door and took their escape. It took them until noon to reach the Mississippi river where they stopped to rest. They were just falling asleep when they heard dogs barking in the distance. “It’s the slave catcher ! We’re doomed unless we can find a boat !” cried Marose as she and Izzie leapt to their feet.
They grabbed their socks and rushed towards the reeds. “Look, a boat !” shouted Izzie triumphantly. They crossed the river safely. They went on to travel through Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota to North Dakota then in a wagon to Canada.
Chapter 3. Canada
In Canada, a rich old woman employed Izzie and Marose. They lived with the old woman and got paid. One day, as Izzie and Marose scrubbed the floor, Izzie gushed, “It’s heaven here, Isn’t it Marose ?”
“Yep, we don’t get whipped no more,’ agreed Marose.
