Yalobusha Co., MS
The first record in which it is possible to identify this John Barns from the many John Barneses was the record of his marriage in Yalobusha Co., Mississippi, to Martha Cannon recorded in Book A on page 6, 28 Feb 1835. A check of the Yalobusha Tax List for 1834 and 1835 produced the following Barneses:
- Lilburne Barnes
- William Barnes
- John Barnes (presumably the above)
- Thomas Barnes [however, this may be Thomas Burns/Burnes]
In April of 1834 John S. Barnes was elected Constable in the southwest district. A John Barnes remained on the Tax list through 1841; however, his household was not found in the 1840 Yalobusha Co., MS, census.
Other Barnes marriages in Yalobusha:
- Sena (shown as Sinai) Barns to L. Cunningham [found in later records as Lenoir Cunningham] Bk.A p.28 Abt. 1838
- William Barnes to Rebecca Waits 06 Oct 1839
- Shadrack C. Barnes to Sarah Garner Bk C. 10 Dec 1858
Land Patents in Book 1:
- Lilbourn Barnes 19 Dec 1835
- Loftin Barnes 20 Nov 1833
- Mary Barnes 10 July 1839
- William Barnes 31 Oct 1833
- William Barnes Sr 09 Oct 1839
The parents of John S. Barnes have not been established, but he might have been the son of either Loftin Barnes (whose birth dates are reported variously as 1762 to about 1775/1785) or William Barnes (born about 1780/1790). The latter William Barnes was in the 1830 Fayette Co., TN, census next door to Lilburn Barnes. We do not know for certain that any of the records in Yalobusha Co. for William Barnes are for the one in that 1830 census. A William Barnes of the same age range was in the 1840 Lafayette Co., MS, census in a location near that of John S. and Martha (Cannon) Barnes and Martha's parents, Carter and Sarah Cannon; however, the composition of his household is quite different from that of the William in 1830 (perhaps it is the same man with a second wife who was in her own second marriage). No further history of the elder William Barnes is known for certain. Loftin Barnes later moved to locations in Texas and Arkansas somewhat near John's family. A William Barnes, however, was near John in Red River and Cass Counties in Texas, but he could have been the younger one who married Rebecca Waits. We now know from Y-DNA results for descendants of Lilburn and Loftin that these two men were from different Barnes families and not related to each other.

Cass Co., TX
The next area we find our particular John Barnes is Cass Co., Texas. In 1841 he and Calvin
Cunningham were witnesses for James Skinner and each other in their applications for land grants
in East Texas - Red River Co. area which became Cass Co. in 1846. John was recorded in the 1850 Cass Co., Tx census. In 1850 a Barnes ran for constable
but only received 2 votes. No first name was given, however.
Other Barneses present in Cass County in the 1846 tax list include (their precise identies are unknown:
- Benjamin Barnes
- John M. Barnes
- William Barnes

Tarrant Co., TX
Next, we pick up John Barns paying poll tax in Tarrant Co., Texas. Why he moved to Tarrant is unclear but his wife's family also moved. By 1863 John was paying taxes on 174 acres of land
which eventually would be divided between his heirs. Early Tarrant County must have been a hostile place and records for the county did not survive well. There is no census for 1860, and no early marriage records. Some early probate records do exist and the records of the estate of Carter Cannon mentions the heirs of John Barnes in 1877 therefore we surmise both he and
Martha are deceased at that time.
