The "Dictionary of American Names" states the following: Crumpton (Eng.) one who came from Crompton (homestead at the bend) in Lancashire.

In the newspaper, "Atlanta Journal and Constitution," 7 August 1977, John C. Downing states that "This English place name was acquired from once having lived in the township of Crompton, in the parish of Oldham,Lancashire. The meaning is derived from two old English words, Crum(B) or Cram(B), meaning crooked and TUN, meaning homestead, manor, village. The sense would be of such a place laid out in an irregular shape due, probably, to the contour of the land or the presence of a river.

Hugh de (of) Crompton lived in Lancashire in 1130 and Brun de Crumpton and Adam de Cromton were on the jury rolls there in 1246. The wills of John, Edward and Richard Crompton, all of the township or Crompton, are on file in Richmond, Cheshire.

John Crompton and Ruth Baxter were issued a marriage license in London in 1781. Arthur, Henry and Ralph Crompton arrived in Virginia in the period 1650-66 and Robert Crumpton arrived in 1666.
