Little Grand Rapids School is located in the centre of the populated area of the reserve. The main building is ten years old with an addition that was built in 1974 and a gymnasium built in 1979. Prior to 1981 the School was administered under the Department of Northern Affairs and Development (DIAND). The Southeast Resource Development Council funds secondary education, grade 10 to 12. The Little Grand Rapids Education Authority operates the school. The community has a local School Committee appointed by the Little Grand Rapids First Nation Council. Student enrollment stands at about 240. There is one principal, thirteen teachers, teaching grade Nursery - Grade 12, one Resource Teacher and two teacher-aides. There are some fifteen support personnel connected to the school.
The large classrooms have carpeted floors and are well equipped with chalk boards and bulletin board space. There is also a library which has story books and multimedia materials for all ages.
The school is well equipped with computers, projectors, recorders, record players, duplicators, televisions, laminating machiene, as well as other equipment and aids for teaching. The provincial curriculum is used and adjusted or supplemented where needed.
Because of the students' cultural background and limited use of the English language, the provincial curriculum needs to be modified in order to teach the students. Provincial textbook recommendations that are listed on Guides may not necessarily reflect the only approach desirable, so other resource materials are recommended by the School Division, which might better reach the minds and understanding of the children.
The staff of the Little Grand Rapids School is responsible for organizing and implementing an academic program which stresses the needs of individual students. A number one priority of the school is to make the students aware of, and be proud of their Native heritage.
It is expected that teachers will create a learning environment conducive to the individual needs of their students. All teachers are expected to be dedicated to their students, enough to spend a great deal of time in organizing and carrying out their academic and extra-curricular activities. Southeast School Division provides an orientation for all teachers in late August. At this time introductions are made and information such as employee benefits, job responsibilities, policies, etc., are covered. Teachers are also provided with preparation time to develop plans and lessons for the upcoming school year.
Teacher Accommodations - Teachers are supplied with good houses built near the school. There are four separate bungalows and three duplexes that serve as teacherages. Each residence is comfortably furnished with a living room, dining room, kitchen, washroom, laundry and storage and closet space.
