
For its size, the school is well-equipped. The school is well stocked with textbooks and writing materials, art supplies, etc. Each classroom has a library book shelf, and the main office is also used as a resource area. The school has a ski-doo and motor boat for transportation.
Enrollment and Attendance - Enrollment, at present is 113 children age 5 - 17. Classes of about twenty pupils, two grades per room are the norm. Attendance is usually over 90% most months, but drop slightly during the trapping and ricing season.
Staff - The school employs a half-time teaching principal, seven teachers, one Resource teacher, three teacher-aides and two janitors. All are Southeast employees, though only the teacher-aides and janitors are local residents.
Curriculum - The curriculum is essentially the concepts and skills prescribed by the Province of Manitoba, though teachers are expected to adapt this curriculum to the needs of local children. A great deal of emphasis is placed on teaching English as a second language, as most children learn no English at home. TESL techniques are used to build skills, first in oral English and later in reading and writing. As much material as possible is drawn from, or related to, the experiences of local children.
Teacher Accommodations - This consists of two large bungalows and three duplexes, all close to the school. One house has two bedrooms, the other has three bedrooms, plus a full basement in each. The latest additions are two duplexes making four extra units. All units are equipped with the usual conveniences and furnished with most items of a permanent nature. Appliances include freezers, range, automatic washer and dryer. Only food, clothing, bedding, dishes and personal items need be brought in to make living here very comfortable.
