WILL OF JOHN WATTS OF CHIPPING WARDEN 1557
In the name of God amen, the 3rd day of February in the year of our Lord God 1557, I John Watts of
Chipping Warden being of perfect mind and good remembrance but sick in my body do order and make this my last will and testament in manner and form as followethFirst I commit my soul to Almighty God and my body to be buried in the church yard of Warden
Also I bequeath to the mother church of Peterborough 4d
Also I bequeath and give to my father and mother if they be alive at my departing 3 sheep branded upon the far side, if not to remain to my wife and also to my father, my leather doublet, a russet coat and my best hose, and 3s 4d of money and if they be not alive, to remain to my wife
Also I give a coffer of Elm which was John my brothers, to William Hutchins my godson,
Also I give to John Hutchins a table board of oak after the decease of my wife, "these things last both" [something omitted here?]
Also I give to Alice Hartwell an heifer of 3 years of age and a coffer which was my own afore I was married and I also bequeath and give 3s 4d to the buying of a cope and to the maintaining of the tapers 8d and to one that shall ring the great bell the dirge space 4d
And the rest of my goods moveable and unmoveable not given nor bequeathed, my debts paid I give to my wife whom I make my whole Executrix of this my last will & testament and these be my debts to pay
Imprimis I owe to William Walker 40s
Also to William Wodbanck 33s 4d
These bearing witness hereof William Briggs curate Humfrey Haynes John Birch and Thomas Newman with other "moo". [Mooted]
NB John WATTS refers to "my brother John" He MAY be referring to a brother in law in which case he most likely would have included the surname. It is entirely possible that he did have a brother by exactly the same name as himself.
