WILL OF THOMAS DWALE OF BLAKESLEY 1547

In the name of God amen the 23 day of January in the year of our Lord God 1547 I Thomas Dwale of Woodend in the parish of Blakesley in the county of Northampton being in good mind thanks be to God, make this my present testament and last will in manner and form as hereafter followeth

First I commend my soul unto Almighty God my maker and redeemer, to our blessed Lady Saint Mary and to all the holy company in heaven and my body to be buried within the church yard of Our Blessed Lady in Blakesley aforesaid and so for the sick I give and bequeath to the high altar of Our Blessed Lady in Blakesley for my tithes and oblations forgotten 12d

To the mother church of Peterborough 4d and to the reparations of the church of Blakesley 8d

Item I give & bequeath to John Dwale my brother my land, closes, meadows and pastures lying and being in Pateshill parish the which Thomas Popline [??] of the same parish hath? in usage and occupying at this present time to have and to hold the foresaid land close, meadows and pastures to him and to his heirs for ever

This exception I will to be observed[?]& apt if it please God to send a heir begotten between me and my wife Johan Dwale then I will my foresaid land, closes, meadows and pastures shall return again to my heir when he cometh to lawful age forever

Item I give and bequeath to John Dwale my brother my best coat, my best doublet, my best cap, my bow and 2 lands of my best wheat that I have in Woodend fields and the "tyar" of a cart

Item I give and bequeath to Johan Dwale my wife during her life my house and houses in Woodend with all the land, close, meadows and pastures belonging to the same house lying & being in Woodend fields and in Blakesley fields and I will that she for her lifetime shall keep the foresaid house and all things belonging to it in sufficient and lawful reparations

And if it please God to send her and me an heir then I will the foresaid house and houses and all my land that I have both in Woodend in Blakesley & Pateshall after the death of my wife shall return again to my heir forever

And if we have no heir then I will after the death of my wife, John Dwale my brother be my heir and to enjoy, possess and have all my lands houses, closes, meadows and pastures that I have in Woodend, Blakesley and Pateshall to him and to his heirs forever

The residue of all other my goods moveable & unmoveable my debts and legacies first paid and my funeral expences in honest manner fulfilled and paid I give and bequeath wholly to Jone [sic] Dwale my wife whom I make and ordain to be my true and faithful sole executrix of this my present testament and last will.

These are the witnesses Sir John Henson vicar, Thomas Addys, John Marriatt, William Whitton, William Benyfilde.
