WILL OF JOHN FOX OF CHACOMBE 1593

In the name of God amen, the ninth day of January in the year of our Lord God one thousand five hundred ninety and two in the thirty and five year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Elizabeth by the grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith etc.,

I John Fox of Chacombe in the county of Northampton, gent., being whole of mind and memory, laud and praise be unto Almighty God, make and ordain this my testament and last will in manner and form following

First I give and bequeath my soul to Almighty God, most humbly beseeching him to have mercy on me according to his great mercy.

First I give and bequeath to Mary Fox my wife one full fourth part of all the Lordship or Manor of Drayton in the County of Oxon with the rights, rents, members and appurtenances thereof for and during the full term and expiration of nine years next and immediately following the date hereof and after the end and expiration of the said nine years,

I give and bequeath unto Clemence Fox my daughter, all that the full said one fourth part of the Manor or Lordship of Drayton abovesaid, with the rights, rents, members and appurtenances thereof and of all that the "scite" or chief Manor House of the said Manor situate in Drayton aforesaid and one full fourth part of all that the parsonage, advowson, free gift and right of presentation of and to the parish church and parsonage of Drayton aforesaid with all and singular [the] profits and commodities whatsoever unto the said fourth part of the said Manor belonging or in any wise appertaining for and during the natural life of the said Clemence Fox.

And after her decease the reversion and remainder thereof unto my son John Fox and o the "heires mailes" of his body lawfully begotten.

And for default of such issue unto my son Richard Fox and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten

And for default of such issue, unto my brother Mr Richard Fox and to the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten

And for default of such issue, to my said daughter Clemence Fox and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten and for default of such issue to remain to the right heirs of me the said John Fox forever

Item I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Clemenc[sic] Fox in money the sum of one hundred marks to be paid unto her at the age of 18 years

Item I give and bequeath unto my said son John Fox in money the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid unto him at the age of 21 years

Item I give and bequeath unto Alice Fox my daughter in money the sum of one hundred marks to be paid unto her at the age of 18 years

Item I give and bequeath unto Ann Fox my daughter in money the sum of one hundred marks to be paid unto her at the age of eighteen years

Provided always that if it shall please God to call out of this mortal life John Fox, my son, Clemence Fox, my daughter, Alice Fox my daughter or Ann Fox my daughter, before their parts and portions unto them above given shall grow unto them due as is aforesaid, that then such the portion of him or her deceased shall remain to be equally divided by even portions amongst the survivors of all my children.

Item I give and bequeath unto my said son Richard Fox my best silver cup gilt, my best silver salt and my ring or Signet to be delivered unto him at the age of 21 years

The residue of all my goods whatsoever afore not given or bequeathed I give and bequeath unto Mary Fox my wife making and ordaining her my full and sole Executrix of this my last will and testament

And also ordaining my well beloved friends Mr Chamberlaine, my cousin Mr Michael Fox and my brother in law Mathew Knight, giving to Mr Chamberlain towards his pains, in money, twenty shillings, and to the other two, ten shillings apiece. John Fox

Sealed and delivered in the sight and presence of those whose names are underwritten
