WILLIAM CLARKE OF LITTLE BRINGTON 1584

In the name of God amen, the 19th day of July in the year of our Lord God 1584, I William Clarke of Little " Bringhton" in the parish of Great " Brinton" and in the county of Northampton, husb[andman], being sick in body but whole in mind and of good and perfect remembrance, laud and praise be unto Almighty God, do make and ordain this present testament herein concerning my last will in manner and form following, that is to say,

First I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker & Redeemer and my body to be buried in the parish church or churchyard of "Bringhton"

Item I bequeath to the maintenance of the bells in the parish church of Brington 4d "four" new ropes

Item I bequeath unto my son in law Thomas Duncklie the youngest son of Nicholas Duncklie the lease of a piece of ground commonly called five "akeres" lying and being in Welton field

Item I give unto the said Thomas Duncklie before named the lease of a ground at " Throop" during "out" the whole years and fourscore ewes, the best he can take or draw out of all my sheep and five."canes " paying unto the Lord the yearly rent of the said ground

Item I bequeath unto the same Thomas Duncklie one half yard land set, lying and being in " Brokeole" field and in Muscot field with all the lands, meadows, pastures, commons, feedings and all other profits and commodities springing, growing, rising and abounding thereupon to have and to hold to the aforesaid Thomas Duncklie and to the heirs of his bodie lawfully begotten for ever world without end, and if it so happen the said Thomas Duncklie to decease without heirs or issue lawfully begotten that then I will the aforesaid half yardland to remain and be equally divided between his other two brethren, that is to wit, Hendry Duncklie and William Duncklie if they be then living and to their heirs if any they have, if it so happen that if the said bretheren do depart not having any heirs then living, that then the said half yard land to return to the bretheren of the [said] William Clarke and to their heirs forever to endure

Item I bequeath unto my "wive's" son Hendry Duncklie the eldest son of Nicholas Duncklie, deceased, threescore sheep

Item I bequeath unto William Duncklie the second son of the aforesaid Nicholas Duncklie deceased, threescore sheep

Item I give unto my "wives" daughter Joan, the youngest daughter of the said Nicholas Duncklie one heifer with calf, 6 sheep and yearly a land to sow a strike of barley being appointed, tilled and sowed during the space of ten years by mine executors, she providing seed thereunto

Item I give unto Hendry Meres "there" [three] daughters thirteen pounds which the said Hendry Meres their father oweth me to be equally divided among them and to be paid unto every one of them at the day of her marriage and if any of them decease before she be married that then her part or their parts to remain to the other then living

Item I give unto my wife Isabell Clarke one house with a close and a yard land with all the parts and commodities thereunto belong[ing] or in any ways appurtaining, set, lying and being within the to[wns] fields and "meares of flower" [?] to her own proper use during the whole term of her life and after her decease I give unto her two eldest sons Hendry and William the said yardland with all [page worn] ...... and commodities thereunto belonging except the house and close with two lands in a field and the grass, now in the tenure and holding of Nicholas Reade during the term of 21 years without paying any penny rent

And at the end of the foresaid 21 years the one half of the said land with the house and the close to give unto my brother William Clarke and to his heirs forever.

The other half of the said land with the said profits, the house and close excepted I give unto my brother Thomas Clarke and unto his heirs forever.

Item I give unto every one of my godchildren which are this day alive, one ewe sheep to be delivered unto them presently after my decease

Item I give unto the poor in the parish of "Bringhton" 13s 4d to be divided at the discretion pf my overseers

Item I give unto my sister Annis Clarke one pot, one pan, one heifer with calf and ten sheep, three pair of sheets to be delivered in the same year next after my decease

Item I give unto every one of my brother Thomas Clarkes children one sheep

I give unto my brother Richard Clarke every year during my "wieves" life four strike of barley

Item I will that my 1 wives youngest son Thomas Duncklie shall enter of his land at the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel next after my decase to be tilled and "sowen" of the proper cost and charge of my said wife

Item I make my wife my full and whole Executor of all my goods and "catteles" moveable and unmoveable which is yet unbequeathed as well within as without during the term of her life and at her decease I will that all those said "catteles" and goods to be equally divided among my wifes three sons to be equally divided among them that is to say, Hendry, William and Thomas

Item I make and ordain Thomas Webb, Jhon Kinning, Jhon Billingam and Jhon Gamedg my overseers

Item I give unto my son Thomas Duncklie one great chest with two locks

Item I give unto William Duncklie one great coffer

Item I give unto Hendry Duncklie the best coffer next

Item I give unto my brother Richard Clarke's daughter also one sheep

Item I give to my sister Isbell Hoges two daughters either of them one sheep

And I utterly detest, abhor and deny all and every will or wills, bequeathes, that ever I from the beginning of the world unto this present day have willed, made or caused to be made
