WILL OF FOWKE BUTTREY OF MARSTON ST LAWRENCE 1558

In the name of God amen, the 4th day of October Anno Dom a thousand five hundred 58 and in the "fyft and syxte" year of the reigns of our Sovereign Lord and Lady King Philip and Queen Mary I Fowke Buttrey of "Marson" St.Lawrence in the county of Northampton, gentleman, being sick in body & of whole and perfect mind and remembrance God be thanked do ordain constitute & make this my last will & testament in manner and form hereafter following:

First I do give and bequeath my soul and body to Almighty God my Creator, Redeemer and Saviour trusting by the merits of Christ's death and passion they both shall have eternal life in the joys everlasting. And I will that after my decease my body be honestly buried according to my degree within the parish church of Marson aforesaid by the discretion of mine Executor and overseers

And I will that at my said burial there shall be bestowed amongst priests and clerks and 3 lights and black cloth the sum of £8 and more, 40s to buy 4 black gowns for 4 of the most poorest men householders of Marston to wear and carry the lights at my said funerals

Also I will that at my months mind next after my decease there be bestowed amongst priests & clerks and poor men £5 in money and in consideration of the small dole at my said burial to be made I give and bequeath to the township of Brackley to be distributed the day of my months mind amongst the poorest people there dwelling the sum of forty shillings and to the poorest people of Banbury [an]other 40s to be distributed in like manner and to the township of Middleton in like manner 20s and the township of  Thenford in like manner 13s 4d, to Chipping Warden in like manner 20s, to Edgecote 13s 4d, to Farthinghoe 10s, to Greatworth 10s and to " Thrope Monnfeld" [ Thorpe Mandeville] 10s to be to every the most poorest of the foresaid inhabitants in the said towns given and distributed by mine Executor with the advice & consent of my overseers as is aforesaid.

And I give further unto every person rich and poor inhabiting in Marson aforesaid 2d & to every cottier there dwelling besides for his whole household 12d.

Also I give to the mother church of Lincoln 3s 4d and to the parish church of St. Lawrence in Marson to be bestowed upon reparations and ornaments of the same church by the churchwardens there for the time being, the sum of 40s.

And at the church of Middleton to be likewise employed 6s 8d.

Also I give and bequeath to every my godchildren which I have within the parish of Marson aforesaid 12d.

and to every servant that I have at my death as well men as women servants 3s 4d and will that Robert Bull shall have meat drink, lodging and clothing honestly, during his life within my house at Marson aforesaid & 12d in money every quarter at the cost and charge of my Executor and that also my Executor shall yearly keep on "Obyte" with dirge and mass said within the parish church of Marson aforesaid for ever and shall yearly bestow among priests, clerks and poor people at the same obit kept for my soul, my fathers, mothers, and my wives and all Christian souls 13s 4d so long as the law will permit "orells" the same to be distributed by my Executors or overseers or one of them yearly to the poor people there dwelling.

And I do further give and bequeath Johan Buttery my daughter £4 of good and lawful money of England to be paid and delivered to her within one month next after my decease by my Executor over and besides three hundred and twenty pounds which I have given and delivered to the said Johan to make her sum trust? four hundred pounds, and six kine which shall be found in or upon my farm at Marson aforesaid at the only costs and charges of my Executor during such time and also so long as the same Johan shall live single and unmarried & she to have the whole profits of the said kine to her proper use.

And also sufficient & wholesome meat, drink, lodging and apparel of and in my said farm in Marson aforesaid at the costs and charges of my Executor until the said Johan be married.

and I bequeath more to her, one dozen of silver spoons with plain ends and no knobs & the best "harnes gyrdell" that was my wifes.

Also I give and bequeath to Ales Bull my "bonswoman" 2 kine and 10 sheep to be delivered to her by my Executor within one month next after my decease and also 40s in money to be paid to her by my Executor when she shall be of the age of 30 ? years or at such time as my executor doth put her away & is not minded to keep her.

And all the residue of my goods, cattles, money, plate leases, household stuff and debts not before given nor bequeathed these my legacies and bequests being truly fulfilled and performed, I do wholly give and bequeath them to Cressent Buttrey my son whom I do make my only Executor for the execution and performance of this my last will and testament by the counsel consent and advise of William Chauncye Esquire, John Blynco, gent & Sir William Mayew, clerk, vicar of Marson aforesaid whom I make, ordain and appoint the overseers of the due performance of this my last will and testament and for their several pains to be therein taken I do give to every of them 26s 8d and further I will that Mr Chaunce and our vicar Mr Mayew, my overseers shall have the custody of all my goods, "cattells" & farms with all the profits thereof to the use of my son & performance of my will immediately after my decease & until my son be of the age of 21 years & more & then my said overseers shall stand accountable for so much as they have received to my said son,

And concerning my lands & tenements, because I have not such ready money as should presently after my decease pay and discharge all my foresaid legacy & bequests, therefore I do give and bequeath all my lands & tenements in Banbury & Wardington in the Co. of Oxford & all those my lands & tenements in "Meycote" [Morcott] and "Grymsbury" in the county of Northampton to my foresaid overseers for the space of 4 years next after my decease with the whole rents and profits of the same towards the payment of this my legacies and after to descend to my son Cressent and to his heirs for ever etc., These being witnesses per me William Chauncey, per me William Mayew, per me John Blynckow

In the name of God amen, this last day of June in the year of our Lord God a thousand five hundred fifty and nine, I Robert Poyner of the town and parish of Pawlespurye, sick in body but whole of remembrance, thanks be unto Almighty God do make and ordain my last will and testament in manner and form following

First I bequeath my body and soul unto Almighty God willing that when my soul is departed from this miserable life, that then my body shall be buried in the churchyard of Pawles Purye.

Item to the mother church of Peterborough 2d

Item I bequeath my lease of Nesterfeldes in the parish of Shelswell the sheep, horses, mares, geldings and beasts to my three sisters equally to be divided amongst them.

Item I bequeath twenty pounds which John Pincarde of Toster [ Towcester] Mr Sommers Awlbert of London and Mr Lewson doth owe to my brother's son Thomas Poyner to be delivered when he cometh to 21 years.

Item I bequeath 16 score sheep which be at Pawlespurye to my three sisters equally to be divided amongst them.

Item I bequeath all my household stuff ay Paulesperye to my sister Lane

Item to William Barton ten sheep one cow a featherbed, a bolster and a coverlett

Item I bequeath to my sister Lyes' children equally to be divided amongst them 40s

The rest of all my goods, moveable and unmoveable, my debts, legacies and burial performed, then I will and give all the rest of my goods to Mr John Foxley and to my brother Richard Lane whom I make my full Executors, these being witnesses William Nonney amd John Cats, Robert Poyner
