The Tallinn Research Group (TRG) was founded in 1969 by Prof. Dr. Victor Zahhar Aladjev (Aladyev). At present the TRG consolidates more than a 35 researchers of the different Republics of the former USSR. The Group headquarters is located in Tallinn (Estonia), activity of which is coordinated by President Acad. Dr. V.Z. Aladjev and Scientific secretary Dr. Ü. J. Hunt. Main trends of scientific researches are such as: mathematical theory of Homogeneous Structures (Cellular Automata) and their applications, mathematics, cybernetics, mathematical modelling, informatics, mathematical and theoretical biology, applied programming, computer science, the publishing trade in the above areas, and some others. The TRG cooperates with a series of the leading researchers and research groups in HS problems. Members of the TRG participated in work of a series of scientific conferences and other forums in the USA,Germany,Great Britain,Holland,Hungary, Japan, and other countries. The main scientific results of the TRG were published in a series of periodicals, transactions and proceedings in the USA, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Japan, USSR, Estonia, Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Moldova and other countries. The long TRG activity in the Homogeneous Structures problems received international recognition. At present, the TRG is as collective member of the Baltic Branch of the Russian Academy of Noosphere and the IFIP Working group in Parallel processing by Cellular Automata.
In what follows, we present general of the work we have done in the mathematical theory of Homogeneous Structures (HS) {Cellular Automata} and their applications in mathematical modelling, computer science, mathematical and theoretical biology and in parallel processing and parallel algorithms over the years 1969-1998 [1-150].
Indeed, we have done much more, particularly in the areas of mathematics, software, informatics, modern computer technologies, programming training, biological modelling and cybernetics. Much of our mathematical researches has been stimulated by these problems. But we hope that this will give some idea of the many problems that exists in the theory of HS and their applications. The paper presents the extended bibliography of the TRG activity in the HS problems and other areas of the modern natural sciences, as a whole.
At present, the HS problems presents highly enough developed in-dependent area of the modern cybernetics, which has a considerable sphere of applications. The HS is an parallel information processing system consisting of intercommunicating identical finite automata. We can interpret HS as the theoretical framework of artificial parallel information processing systems. From the logical point of view the HS is an infinite automata with a characteristic internal structure and functional principle. The HS theory can be considered to be the structural and dynamical theory of the infinite automata. HS can serve as the basis for modelling of many discrete processes and they present enough interesting independent formal objects for investigations as well.
The modern point of view of the HS problems has been formed under the influence of works by John von Neumann, S. Ulam,A. Burks, E.R. Moore, J. Myhill, R. Vollmar, E.F. Codd, H. Yamada, S. Amoroso, A.R. Smith, T. Toffoli, S. Wolfram, G. Hedlund, E.R. Banks, H. Nishio, H. Gutowitz, T. J. Ostrand, A. Maruoka, M. Kimura, T. Sato, N. Honda, J. Thatcher, J. Holland, D. Richardson, V.Z. Aladjev, Ja. Barzdin, A. Podkolzin and other numerous researchers of different countries. Applied aspects of the HS theory in respect to perspective computer high parallel architecture very intensively worked out by scientific schools of T. Toffoli in USA, T. Legendi in Hungary, R. Vollmar in Germany, and in respect to biological modelling - by V.Z. Aladjev in the USSR. In our previous activity we investigated different aspects of the HS problems with applied emphasis on computer science, parallel processing and mathematical modelling. Our results in these directions meant substantial new contribution to the HS problems.
Above all, the nonconstructability problem in the classical HS-models is considered in detail. Questions of nonconstructability are fun-damental problems in the study of HS dynamics. Furthermore, nonconstructability in HS-models presents a considerable gnosiological interest. For the purpose of exhaustive investigation of the problem we introduced and investigated four basic typies of nonconstructability (NCF, NCF-1, NCF-2 and NCF-3), and established general interconnections between them. A number of criteria of the existence in HS-models of the above typies of nonconstructability are given. Very interesting results on the algorithmical aspects of the nonconstructability problem were received. Our results on the nonconstructability solve the problem in the classical HS-models as a whole.
In contrast the nonconstructability, the study of the common properties, which reflect the maximal constructive possibilities of the classical HS-models, deserves great interest and the number of our interesting results are devoted to the problems. Our results in this direction allow to discover a number of useful correlations between nonconstructability and the universal reproductability of the finite configurations (CFs) in the classical HS-models, and to solve a number of very interesting mathematical problems as shown.
Formal grammar theory (FGT) is the essential part of the automata theory. Therefore, the study of HS dynamics from the point of view of the FGT appears to be worthwhile. For that matter, the theory of the parallel grammars defined by classical and non-deterministic HS-models was developed. In our opinion, such parallel grammars are powerful means of mathematical semantics for many kinds of cellular systems of the different nature.
In a series of our works the problem of complexity of the finite CFs in HS-models is enough profoundly is discussed. The essence of our concept of complexity consists in the estimation of complexity of growing of arbitrary finite CF from some primitive one by means of the finite number of global transition functions (GTF) from some finite set Tf. On the basis of the results we presented solutions of a number of problems in the HS theory.
The general decomposition problem (GDP) of GTF in HS-models immediately adjoints the above problem of the complexity. Furthermore, the problem directly concerns the question of constructive complexity of HS-models, which plays an important role for many applied aspects. The GDP can be formulated as follows: Can any GTF of HS-model be presented in the form of a composition of the finite number of more simple global functions? Our results in the direction solve the GDP and the GLDP (which is essential generalization of the GDP) for HS-models as a whole.
In a series of our works is discussed the problem of modelling which plays a very important role in the HS theory itself and in its numerous applications. General aspects of the problem are linked with modelling of one HS by another: real-time modelling, modelling with suppression of certain properties of modelled HS, simplification of characteristics of modelled HS and optimal modelling, and so on. On the basis of the introduced concepts we carried out enough detailed study of the multi-aspect problem of modelling in HS-environment.
Along with the above-mentioned general directions in HS theory we investigated a series of more special problems. Among these problems can be marked such ones as : passive and periodical CFs, the problem of the limited growth, synchronization problem, the French flag problem and so on. Along with the classical HS-models we investigated a number of other typies of HS (with refractority and memory, polygenic, non-deterministic, stoshastic, and so on) enough detaily. Above all with respect to biological modelling, the applied aspects of the HS theory were discussed. In the light of the modern state of the HS problems we presented the architecture of the HS theory and its applications from our point of view. Our results in the HS problems meant substantial new contribution to the modern HS theory and its numerous applications.
The second general direction of the TRG activity devoted to the modern computer technologies: system and problem software, training of specialists in computer science and informatics, and so on. On the basis of the work we prepared and published series of 28 books and textbooks on computers and their software. The series is assigned to wide circle of specialists from the different areas.
At last, our research activity is linked with a number of more individual questions, mainly, in discrete mathematics and number theory, probability theory, mathematical and general statistics, cosmology, physics, biology, and so on. Next year the TRG activity will be performing within the framework of the Baltic Branch of the International Academy of Noosphere.

The above List of the TRG publications
is not exhaustive one, but it reflect principal results and directions
of the Group activity over 30 years. Researchers
in many fields find the List to be an essential information
for their scientific work, above all in: Cellular Automatatheory,
Mathematics, Computer Science, Informatics and Cybernetics.
