Hi! My name is Amy Hamovitz. I live in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon, near Eugene, and I love chinchillas! I've been raising chinchillas since February '97 and am a member of MCBA, Mutation Chinchilla Breeders Association. My herd (bet you didn't know that a group of chinchillas is called a herd!) is comfortably manageable with 30 - 40 animals (for now) and my breeding efforts are focused on raising healthy, happy animals with great dispositions and conformation in a variety of colors. Our chinchillas are bred in pairs and trios. For pictures and personal information on most of them just click on the pictures link to the left.

I'm excited to be working with the recessive Violet gene and the weakly dominant Ebony gene in my breeding herd, along with the Standards, Whites, Velvets, and Beiges and every possible combination of them. I've recently started a trio of Sullivan Recessive Beige chins as well, thanks to my dear mentor, Dea Freiheit. My big breeding projects are aimed at getting TOV Tan Whites as well as TOV Violet Whites with nice big blotches of solid markings. You may have guessed that I also love Dalmatians, Pintos, and Leopard Spotted Appaloosas!

Working with color mutations in animals that make such wonderful pets is the perfect hobby for me, especially during the rainy Willamette Valley winters when I don't have to go outside to care for my herd! All of my chins are real sweethearts and get lots of human attention and their babies are handled from birth and become not only accustomed to, but fond of human interaction.

We all sure hope that you like our owner's updated and upgraded site. After all, her goal is to help provide great homes for chinchillas, like us, around
the world.

Why Chins Do/Don't Make Great Pets

So...why would you want a chinchilla? Here are a few considerations, but in general,

CHINCHILLAS MAKE GREAT PETS!

PROS
CONS

Live a long time!
Cute with incredibly soft fur
Friendly, curious, and smart
Easily and inexpensively fed, housed,
      bathed, and entertained
Available in many colors
Practically odor and insect-free
Hypoallergenic
Nocturnal so quiet during the day

Live a long time!
Won't bark to scare strangers away
Need a specialized diet
Poop every waking moment (but easy
      to clean up)
Can't be trained
Chew on everything
Probably won't want to cuddle with you
Nocturnal so they are noisy at night

My Adoption Philosophy "I do believe it's time for my midday nap."

Chinchillas live for a long time - 15 to 20 years. That in itself is a good reason for me to be pretty particular about who I "adopt" chins to. I sell chinchillas primarily as pets and am cautious about selling them to start up breeders without first making sure that they are well educated about chins. I take my responsibility as a breeder quite seriously as I feel responsible not only for the chins I sell but for any offspring they may produce. It's also important to realize that there can easily be added costs once a chinchilla has been purchased due to the occasional need for a visit to the veterinarian. Veterinarians specializing in exotic animals don't come cheap. So, please realize that while I very much want to share these delightful critters with other chinchilla lovers, I just as much want my chins to be happy.
I'll get off my soapbox now.
