The lighter side
But will he pass?......
The son of an ASTE executive member who attends John McGlashan College got a surprise when he sat his sixth form English examination yeaterday (Tuesday). One of the questions on the paper was an analysis of persuasive advertising - the Otago Polytechnic ASTE advertisement taken out in Saturday's ODT! The examination question asked students to analyse the advertisement and describe the purpose of the message. The students were also asked to analyse the specific ways that the advertisment was structured in order to convey a particular point of view. Although the student struggled to think about what had been said at home about the dispute, I guess it must be regarded as a complement to our ASTE media group that their advertisement could be regarded as an example of effective "propaganda".

One of the features of the industrial action has been the support staff have shown for each other. Staff commenting that the action has resulted in better team building that any course could have achieved - eat your heart out WINZ - this was free!!!!

Nothing new (ODT-29-10-99)
There is nothing original in politics.... In the crowd, which included protesting Otago Polytechnic staff and students, was Labour Party organiser Michael Gibson. Thinking the protesters were Mr Gibson's crew, Social Services Minister Roger Sowry congratulated him on the turnout.
Sheepishly, Mr Gibson admitted he had nothing to do with them but was actually there to see how the ministers did their show - because his leader Helen Clark would be doing something similar in Dunedin next month
