Mary PIERCE

Mary re-introduced the tennis dress at the 1994 Australian Open. She is constantly helping designers of the dresses, giving her opinion on what she likes. At Wimbledon last year, she wore graceful shirt and shorts, in which looked very good on her. Mary wore the outfit in different colours throughout last year.

Mary Pierce's controversial father, Jim, is banned from attending his daughter's matches. During the '93 French Open he was abusive and ordered to leave the venue. Mary pulled out of the '93 Wimbledon as she did not feel safe from the father. She has a restraining order against him.

The WTA decided that Jim would be banned from all tournaments. Last year, he started coaching other players and the WTA decided that he could attend the matches of the players he now coaches. He got support from Richard Williams the father of Venus and Serena. Williams thought the WTA decision was too rough.

Mary Pierce has powerful groundstrokes in which she is able to hit winners. Her first serve is also a weapon, and her volleys are solid. Mary has improved her all round game as her volleys and second serve were weaknesses. Her fitness was also lacking. She wins matches by starting the points aggressively on the serve and return and controlling the point with her powerful shots.

1998

Mary Pierce won her 4 singles matches at the Hopman Cup beating Huber, Rubin, Coetzer and Habsudova. Pierce was on a 9 match winning streak and in top form during the Australian Open, which included two 6-0 6-0 victories. This was until she fell in the Quarter Finals at the Australian Open. Pierce beat Novotna for the first time 6-4 2-6 6-3 on the way to win the Paris Indoor. She also beat van Roost and Huber. Pierce defeated Davenport 4-6 6-3 6-4 and Martinez 6-7 6-0 6-2 to win the title in Ameila Island. Pierce fell to Lucic at the Italian Open. Pierce blew a 5-1 1st set lead, in losing in the second round of the French Open. She fell in the opening round at Wimbledon. In San Diego Pierce saved match points in both matches to beat Hingis and Venus Williams where she made the final. A leg injury restricted her schedule, and she fell to Williams at the US Open in the round of 16.

1997

Pierce beat Spirlea in Sydney at the start of the year. Unseeded, Pierce defeated Likhovseteva, Huber, Appelmans, and Coetzer to reach the final of the Australian Open. She was playing well until a miserable performance in which Pierce lost to Hingis. Pierce won the Italian Open and made the final of Ameila Island and the German Open. She beat Seles, Coetzer, Sanchez Vicario, Majoli, Huber and Martinez in these tournaments. Suffering a virus at the French Open she was forced to pull out of the doubles. Pierce lost to Seles in the round of 16 of both the French and US Opens in high quality matches. At Wimbledon she fell in the forth round as well. Pierce struggled with a kidney infection throughout the second half of the year. She beat Hingis at the Chase Championships to reach the final. She ended the year with six final performances with one title and a ranking of 7.

1996

Pierce loses in the second round of the Australian Open to Likhovtseva. She get jeered off the court by her home crowd after losing to Ritner in the third round. Ironically on her worst surface, grass, Pierce had her best slam performance of the year reaching the Quarter finals. She lost to Date in 3 sets. She misses the US Open due to injury. Pierce finishes the year ranked 22.

1995

Mary won her first slam of her career by winning the Australian Open. Seeded 4th, she won every match in straight sets and thrashed Huber(9), Zvereva(8), Martinez(2) Sanchez Vicario(1) in total conceding just 20 games. No player won more than 4 games per set as she played in peak form. She made the final of the Paris Indoor losing to Graf. She was suffering injury going into the French Open, where she felt the home pressure losing to Majoli. In her Wimbledon debut, she fell in the second round to compatriot Tauziat. The US Open was another upset loss 6-3 7-6 to Frazier. She finished the year ranked 5 after a high of 3.

1994

In 1994 Pierce played the best ever tennis to reach the final of the French Open. She conceded only 10 games in 6 matches, including a 6-2 6-2 thrashing of Graf and a 6-1 6-1 win over Coetzer. Every ball she hit went for a winner. The final was played over two days because of rain and she lost the final against Sanchez Vicario. Pierce lost to Sabatini for the second year in a row at the Australian Open, in the round of 16 this year. She pulled out of Wimbledon citing that she would not be safe from her father. She fell to Novotna at the US Open Quarter final and the Leipzig final. Pierce ended the year by reaching the semifinals in New York. She defeated Graf for the second time of the year 6-4 6-4 and was ranked 5.

1993

Pierce played an exciting night match against Sabatini at the Australian Open coming within one point of victory. She trailed 2-4 in the first set before winning the set 6-4. The second set was also very close which ended with a tie break. Pierce held 2 match points. On the second match point Pierce hit a ball close to the line and raised her arm saying 'yes' as she ran to the net as if she had won the match. The umpire over ruled and called the ball out. A devastated Pierce, lost the tie break 14-12 and the 3rd set 6-0. Pierce made the fourth round of the French Open, but not without controversy. Against McQuillian her father started yelling at her from the stands. Next match against Po, her father was forced to leave as he was unhappy with Mary losing the 1st set. Pierce played better to defeat Po 6-7 6-3 6-3. Capriati beat her for the second year in a row in Paris 6-4 7-6 in a tough match. Pierce reached the forth round of the US Open beating Schultz before being canned by Graf. In New York, she defeated two top tenners, Sabatini and Navratilova for the first time to reach the semi finals. Although she lost to Sanchez Vicario, she finished the year ranked 13.
