What a night. It was amazing. Sarah, Amy, Laura and I drove seven hours down to Minneapolis to see them. We got there at about four, and waited outside for two hours. We could hear soundcheck inside (Ben's kick drum!!!!) At 5:00 Laura and Sarah went in and got our tickets (we'd ordered over the phone), so Amy and I sat outside and entertained ourselves. We were about ten people (two groups of people) from the front. At about 6:10 they opened the doors and Laura and I raced inside and got front row, right in front of Chris. Amy and Sarah got second row in front of Daniel (they had to...use the facilities before the concert started).
The first opening band, Grinspoon, were good, but they were a bit heavy. The lead singer was sloshed and it showed. The second opening band, Lit, were awesome. Laura bought the cd right after the concert, and they're really good.
After Lit left, the roadies came out and cleared away their drum kit, and cleaned up the stage a bit for silverchair. I saw one of the roadies tuning Chris' sparkly gold bass, and it hit me: I was standing front row at a silverchair concert. Needless to say I got pretty excited.
They came out, and the crowd went nuts. Ben was shirtless, wearing white shorts, his hair spiked. DAMN. Danny Boy was wearing his sparkly black shirt and black pants. And Chris was wearing orangey-red track pants and a navy blue shirt. Sam wore a sweater, but I'm not sure what he wore for pants. (I kept forgetting he was there)
They started with Israel's Son, which blew me away. That's Chris' big bass solo, so I was in bliss. That boy plays so well it's not funny. I was so close I could see the muscles in his arm move while he played. I'm tellin ya, if I could have crawled over the barrier and onto the stage to jump him, I would've.
Daniel said hello to the crowd, said something about being sexual. Then he said "You people in the balcony, you're tops. Get it, balcony, tops. No you don't, nevermind." Next came Emotion Sickness. It's VERY powerful, and I loved it. Sam fits in perfectly.
Daniel seemed pretty out of it, but he's said he has to pump himself full of antidepressants before he preforms, so it wasn't unexpected.
Then came Abuse Me and Slave. They were performed beautifully, they had the crowd pumped. And Chris moves the same way every single concert. *L*
Up next was Ana's Song (Open Fire). I LOVE this song, it's very powerful. Then came Suicidal Dream and Paint Pastel Princess.
Madman was next, during which Daniel jumped up on the drum rider.
Then Ben, Chris and Sam left the stage. Someone behind us yelled "Cemetery", but Laura turned and yelled back "Tomorrow!!" We knew what was in store. Daniel said something about the next song being a new version of an old song, and if we didn't like it, too bad. He proceeded to play a beautiful solo version of Tomorrow. Amy told me she cried, partly because of the song, partly because she had been pulled into the mosh pit, and she was sure she was a dead girl.
Chris, Ben, and Sam came back and they played Miss You Love, which is now one of my favourites. Then Daniel announced that they were gonna play some rock songs. They started with The Door, then Pure Massacre. Daniel fucked with the words during PM, making me think I had gone crazy "wait a minute, that doesn't belong there, I KNOW it doesn't...ohhhhh he's playin with the words, heh..." He switched the words all around, but didn't take any out.
Then came Freak, which was way cool.
After Freak, Daniel tried to quiet us down so he could tell us something. He said that what he was about to do was their lifelong goal, and that they'd tried it before and it didn't work. If we did it right, they'd personally come down and give us all 200$ each (Personally, I woulda settled for getting to TOUCH them, but 200$ sounded pretty damn good...) ANYways, he was going to count to three, and on three everyone was to shut up and stop talking. He had us do a practise round (which was pretty damn good I might add), then came the real thing. He counted to three, and the whole place went quiet. A few people behind us were whispering, but other than that it was total silence. Danny told us that Minneapolis now officially rocked, and that we were the best.
Then he started with Anthem For The Year 2000. He chanted "We are the youth!" and then pointed at us to chant it. He started doing all these karate moves after saying "we are the youth" for us to do it. After about the 50th time doing it, and Ben laughing at Daniel, Danny started the song. It was amazing.
At this point, Amy and Sarah threw their necklaces on stage. (they were chains w/ rings on them that said "2000". They originally bought them as best friend necklaces, but decided to throw them on stage) Sarah's landed behind an amp, but Amy's landed right by Daniel's foot. He finished the song, picked up the necklace, and they headed offstage.
We chanted "silverchair, silverchair" over and over until they came back out for the encore. It started with Satin Sheets, which is an excellent punk song, and then went to No Association. I didn't think they'd do NA, but it was a pleasant surprise, as I love that song. Anyways, they finished and left. We made our way to the back of the club and bought tshirts. Amy and Sarah pulled down two posters from the wall (which is good coz Amy is my sister, so I get to see the poster all the time), and Laura bought Lit's new cd.
Somewhere along the way, Daniel did his famous "Can I get a hallelujah", which amused the hell out of me.
We went outside, and circled the building twice, checking to see if silverchair was around, but they had left already. Oh well, there's always next time.....
