The fourth and final season of the show aired only half of a season of episodes (7 episodes). In Season 4, Emily Byrd Starr hovers on the edge of adolescence, yearning about the meaning of love and life. She is beset by questions that challenge her writer's soul: are her dreams of reaping fame and fortune as a writer an impossible fantasy? Season 4 ends with an episode where Emily hovers between life and death after a shocking accident. She reviews her life in the context of being a failure as a writer. Returning regular stars are Martha MacIsaac, Sheila McCarthy, Stephen McHattie, Jessica Pellerin, Kris Lemche, and Shawn Roberts. (Mr. Carpenter, Isabel, and Malcolm were not in this season. Malcolm and Isabel were seen only in flashbacks.
Rites of Passage

Emily's life is changing. As she prepares to take the entrance exam for high school, Emily is
fraught with the insecurities of young adulthood. And even if she passes the test, how will the
family afford to send her to school? Not only must she pass the test, but she is determined to win
the scholarship-the legacy of Queen Victoria's visit-that will enable her to fulfill her dream of a
higher education. And the pursuit of that scholarship puts her in direct competition with her
dearest friends-Ilse, Teddy, and Perry. The three friends set off to Summerside filled with a sense
of adventure, and more than a little trepidation. Their journey takes some unexpected twists and
turns.
Taming of Ilse Burnley
