October 1, 2002

Mets fire manager Bobby Valentine.

Leading candidate to replace him is San Francisco Giants manager Dusty Baker.

October 14, 2002

New leading candidate for Mets managerial opening is Seattle Mariners manager Lou Piniella. Dusty Baker stated his comments about wanting to manage in New York were "misinterpreted".

October 21, 2002

Oakland Athletics manager Art Howe has agreed to a 4-year $9.4 millon contract to manage the Mets. Lou Piniella agreed to a contract to manage the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, said he wanted to be close to his family who live in the Tampa Bay area.

November 6, 2002

The Mets are turning to the enemy to help boost their starting rotation. They are interested in picking up Tom Glavine as a free agent from the Braves and they are even interested in getting permission from the Braves to talk to Leo Mazzone, the Braves pitching coach, to be their pitching coach.

November 7, 2002

Leo Mazzone was resigned by the Braves on the same day they granted the Mets permission to talk to him. (Sounds fishy to me...)

December 5, 2002

The Mets have signed Tom Glavine to a 3-year contract, with a team option for a 4th.

January 1, 2003

The Mets have signed free agent outfielder Cliff Floyd and SS Rey Sanchez.
