Shao Kahn's leading sorcerer may not be all that powerful like Kabal, or Smoke, or even Sub-Zero, but he's got a few aces under the sleeve. First the fireballs are faster than in MK2, now you can hit someone jumping with all three fireballs. Then there are the ground eruptions, which are useful when someone fires at you or to catch your opponents in mid air when they're jumping back. After the eruptions you can uppercut them, or throw 3 fireballs for a 6-hit kombo, just be careful because some players won't fall for this, someone could avoid the fireballs really easy, and with the eruptions, some experienced players can run to you and kick you out of the game. So, Shang Tsung's real power is morphing, although some morphs are not as easy to do as in the past, you can transform into a fighter that you're more familar with, or you can transform into your opponent's character to fight fire with fire or into some character with a special ability against that of your oppnent, like turning into Nightwolf to fight against Sub-Zero's ice, or Sektor's missiles, or maybe morphing into many characters to change the pace of the fight to your advantage. The good thing about Shang Tsung's morphing in MK3 is that it no longer leaves you as vulnerable when morphing back to normal as it did in MK2, now it's a lot faster.
