Chamber Music

There are a number of dominating traits in Prokofiev's chamber music - as indeed in his music as a whole - which the composer himself specified as five characteristics: classicism, renewal, lyricism, the toccata principle and humour. These traits, which Prokofiev called 'threads', more often than not appear concurrently, rather than being mutually exclusive. By the same token their co-existence often gives rise to conflict, and the tension existing between these irreconcilable elements is one of the strongest indicators of Prokofiev's style.
