Rosie's Ramblings
There are a few changes to Rosie's this month. Additions were made to the "Inside a Needle Book" page and the "Evolution of Needle Books" page. I am also proud to share my "Space" books in the "Special Exhibits" section. Future special exhibits planned
are "The Horseshoe Books" and "The Pop-Up Books". Please check back often because I try to update around the first week of each month.
This time last year, I brought a computer home from school for the summer. My plan was to get on-line and see what was out there. I was still reeling over the demise of my favorite show, "Personal FX", and longed for something to replace it. Somehow I remembered Judith Katz-Schwartz mentioning eBay. Now, one year later, I'm not sure what I would do without it.
Through eBay, I have practically doubled my collection. What is so amazing, is that new needle books continue to crop up. I only win a fraction of the auctions that I bid on, but it is enough to keep me coming back. Just as I used to look forward to watching "Personal FX" every day, now I relish my daily dose of bidding and browsing on eBay. When it was time to take the computer back to school, I had to go buy one.
What I've learned in the last year:
- There are even more needle books than I thought possible.
- I am definitely not the only one that collects them.
- Those little packets inside (that I used to not pay any attention to) are really interesting.
- I am still not entralled by the advertising books.
- The ultimate needle books are the pop-up kind. They were specifically made for little girls and they make me feel like a little girl. Between another collector and myself, we know of the existence of six different kinds.
I am the proud owner of two of them.
- I truly hope that the "marksmenmanagementresearch" will write a book so that I can buy it and see their huge collection. Fellow eBayers know who I am talking about.
- I have bought only 2 needle books in shops this year, even though I look nearly every weekend. This only gives the illusion that they are rare.
- My goal for my second year is to obtain "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Betsy Ross".
In another year will I still be finding needle books on eBay? Will I still enjoy this means of collecting?
We shall see.
