"Southern Emigrant Trail"

The upper road was built by the Mormon Battalion in January 1847. This was the first wagon road into southern California's interior. The lower road was used by the Butterfield Stage in 1858. The wash at the bottom of the picture runs into a dry waterfall just a little to the left, which is the reason the upper paths had to be constructed.

The trail made by the Butterfield stage can still be seen looking from Campbell grade toward the Vallecito stage station.
