The Basics of
Pencil Freestyle Spinning

Freestyle #1

Forward Single -> Reverse Single -> Forward Double -> Halftap
-> Halftap -> Faked Index Spin -> Reverse Single -> Forward Double

So you know how to perform all of the above tricks (with a pencil). But
what should you do now? In this lesson, you will learn how to link these
moves to make a smooth freestyle. The lesson is broken into parts. If
you already know the technique taught in a lesson, move to the next one.

Lesson 1
Harmonic Thumbspin: Forward Single to Reverse Single to Forward Double

Perform a Forward Single. To prepare for the catch, make sure you hook
the index finger so that the pencil is caught in the ready position for
Reverse Single. Perform the Reverse Single, making sure you control it so
that the pencil is caught by only the middle finger. As the pencil hits
the middle finger, move the middle finger back slightly to "absorb the
shock." This prepares you for a Forward Thumbspin. In this combo, you
must perform a Forward Double.

Lesson 2
Linking Forward Multiple into Halftaps

Perform a Forward Multiple (in this case a Double) making sure that the back
of your thumb and the side of your index finger are on the same plane as the
pencil. When your thumb and index finger are on the same plane as the pencil,
you get more control. If they are on a different plane, you get more spins.
Do not spin the pencil too fast. Spin it as fast as you can Halftap. As
the pencil is about to complete the spin, open the index finger and push
the pencil for a Halftap.

Lesson 3
Linking Faked Index Spin into Reverse Single

Perform a slow or medium speed Faked Index Spin. Catch lightly in the midsection
of your index and middle fingers. Move middle finger in to allow pencil
to make a 1/4 rotation while index finger folds into ready position for
Reverse Single. Lower thumb and perform Reverse Single.

Lesson 4
The Final Combo

Make sure your freestyle looks smooth. This means do not change speed of the
spins in the middle of the combo unless changing direction. When catching the
pencil, always 'give in' a little so that the pencil makes a gradual stop instead
of a sudden stop.
