| Bengali as a Foreign Language A breakthrough in Bengali |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Learning Bengali as a foreign language could be made easy on the basis of "User Oriented BengaliOrthography" (Journal of Computers and the Humanities, volume, 33, No.3, pages 241-244, year 1999). Children and adults who wish to learn Bengali as a Second or Third language will find this book useful. The book was originally written in Swedish language, specially for our children Born or brought-up in Sweden and learning Bengali as a Third Language (after Swedish, English, German/French/Spanish) |

| The book has been completely re-written for the English speakers using Bengali-English liaison The speech sounds in Bengali are transcribed elaborately as that of the natives. There are a thousand Bengali letters and signs. It is very difficult to recall all those letters and signs when you want to type in a computer. We found only 108 letters and signs are enough in writing Bengali. We found the conjunct letters not used as initial letter in Bengali word-building are redundants and could be dissected according to Bengali orthographic rule. Here are eaxamples of dissectable conjunct letters. We wish to use a normal computer key-board by ourselves and we are not rich enough to employ a compositor, nor in time to spend three hours to type one page in Bengali (you need one if you have got a thousand signs in your language). However, we show the spelling by using of redundant conjunct letters too vis-a-vis throughout the book. We are not preaching something new in Bengali. We abide by the rules of Bengali grammar and orthography descended from the age of Panini (600 B.C.). |

There are ten chapters in the book divided into two parts. The first part of the book is designed to enable a learner in building Bengali words using Bengali alphabets and signs. The second part of the book is designed to enable a learner in making sentence in Bengali. Only Parts of speech, Tense, and Case and Word-order are dealt in grammar. We found that this level of knowledge in grammar is sufficient to understand Bengali Poems and Stories. In additon we have used Bengali Easy Orthography where only 108 signs (including 10 digits and 20 signs for punctuation and others) are used, dissociating Bengali conjunct letters which are not used as initial letters in Bengali word-building; But we show the spelling using the Bengali Aged Orthography vis-a-vis in smaller letters in order to acquaint the reader with the difficult conjunct letters of Bengali. We were taught by our children to search and find a way to make Bengali easy as a Third l anguage because the language was very difficult to them and they did not have enough time to spend in learning Bengali. The book is available in all big bookshops and libraries in Sweden, Akademibokhandeln Wettergrens Immigrants Institute You may also get the book at the site when you ORDER us Next page |
