CuCl laser teory
The Copper Chloride Laser,
created in 1966, is similar to the Copper Vapor Laser
Then it is better to tell you the:
Copper Vapor Laser teory
This Laser have a great
efficiency, as the carbon dioxide laser.
This laser can be used for industrial application because the ratio used power/work
is very interesting.
It may emitting two different wavelength: 510.6 nm (yellow) e 578.2 nm (green).
It is composed of a ceramic tube where the powder is vaporized with high-temperature
(1650 °C +/- 50 °C).
The tube contains inert low pressure gas, for example helium at 1-2 Torr.
High voltage electric discharge between the electrodes causes collision
among electrons and the copper atoms, who wavelenght energy by photons.
High current (many KiloAmpere) may be obtained with a discharge of
many capacitor connected to the electrodes.
This system allows an impulsed mode working.
There is people who is studing continuous lasing mode Copper Laser(CW).
The impulse duration is about 100 nanoseconds.
The discharges frequency may reach 200 Hz and more; emission appear continually.
Pratic Applications
Here are the Copper Laser
applications:
- Pumping of other laser, Rhodamine lasers for example, tuning on various frequencies.
- Cut or lancing of metals and other materials.
- Metal and polymeries cutting.
- High-speed stroboscopic photograph.
- Fingerprints finding.
- Cancer treatment (sperimental) by destroing the cancering tissue.
- Enriching of uranium 235 by selective photo ionizazion (at the Lawrence Livermore
Laboratories they are experimenting this wirking with a 6000 W laser!)
- Theatrical special effects.
- Holography.
- A lot of other things...
Copper Chloride variants
The harder problem to
solve during the building of the Copper laser is the high working temperature.
For a lower temperature the metallic coper may be substituted with copper
salt which have a lower vaporizing temperature.
One of the possible substance is CuCl which vaporize at only 390° C.
There is another problem: the substance dissociation before the excitement.
For solve this problem it needs to use a doubel discharge; the first dissociates
CuCl into Copper and Chlorine atoms, the second one excites the copper
atoms.
the pause between two discharges is about 150 nanoseconds.
For obtain these discharge it needs a special dual feeder with a pulser.
Changing happens by "spark gap", electrodes putted near the pulser
.
regulatingla the spark gaps distance the pause between discharges varies.
the spark gaps tarature must be done with very much care.
The laser feeding system is porjected for send out about 1000 ampere with
a very high voltege.
To avoid a dangerous mislead effect, eletric connections of the discharge
section are made by metallic conductors and without the normal eletric
cable.
