From: Adams Family Descendants of John Adams and Elizabeth Naylor of Charl es County, MD C.A. 1700-41; Compiled Edited and Published by Robert Ada ms Gaebler, Oak Park, IL; revised edition - June 1988.

Page 6 ...It seems clear that John Adams, the immigrant, arrived in America suffi ciently before 1718 to meet and wed Elizabeth Naylor and start raising a f amily, because that is the year in which his first son was born. He is li sted as a "grower" and seems to have prospered quite well at this. He set tled in Charles County, Maryland, and eventually died there in 1740 or 17 41. His will is recorded in Volume 22, folio 311 at the Annapolis Ha ll of Records in Maryland. It is dated 16 September 1740. As far as we c an determine, John and Elizabeth had five sons and no daughters. The so ns were: John, Thomas Randolph Greenfield, George, Richard, and Luke....

Page 7 ...according to the will cited earlier. He left 154 acres of land to h is son Richard, and another tract of land to his son Thomas Randolph Green field Adams.....That land was called "Birmingham"....John received a porti on of the remaining land...George received two slaves, but no land....

(I will attempt to obtain a copy of this will and transcribe it for this f ile at a later date.)

According to Bob's book, John was possibly born in Worcestershire, England .

************************************************************************** ************************************************** In October of 2001 a discovery was made that seems to dispute the parenta ge of John Adams, spouse of Elizabeth Nailor. It is now believed that Jo hn was not the immigrant ancestor, but rather his father, Francis Adams, s pouse of Grace Thomas. Through the efforts of Sandy Adams and mysel f, we are attempting to untangle this webbed mystery through documentati on of everything as we are able so others may also follow the paper tra il as we are doing.

Sandy Adams has posted the following statement in her database on rootsw eb and I concur with her, but only time and LOTS of doumentation will pro ve our theory correct or not... "Elise Greenup Jourdan, author of "Early F amilies of Southern Maryland" states that Francis Adams is the father of J ohn Adamswho married Elizabeth Naylor/Nailor based upon "various court doc uments". This information conflicts with a legend embraced by later genera tions of the Adams/Naylor line indicating that John Adams was born in Engl and. No aspects of the legend have been proven to date and interacti on of the John Adams family with families associated with the Francis Ada ms line - as well as date and geographic location evidence - appears to in dicate that Elise Greenup Jourdan is correct in her statement that John Ad ams is the eldest son of Francis and Grace Thomas Adams. This connecti on is made based upon her findings and is considered "challenged" pendi ng investigation into the "various court documents" referred to in "Ear ly Families of Southern Maryland." "
