SWANSEA MEMORIES

by Tom Sheppard

The accompanying photograph of the old South Wales Club, Swansea, is the result of a very pleasant evening with my old friend Emlyn Davies.

Emlyn, Jos Davies and Dick Lewis were for many years very close friends. They travelled all over the country, wherever Tippler-men were to be found they would visit them.

Many happy memories were recalled of visits to Sheffield (Crookes and Gleadless) all were well-known to them. Emlyn said both he and Jos thought Sam Billingham was the best fancier they ever knew. It is little realized today that Sam was instrumental in saving our Tipplers during the last war. He put up a tremendous fight with appropriate ministry until he obtained a license for a limited number of fanciers to obtain sufficient corn to enable them to keep nucleus of Tipplers alive. Also numbered among Sheffield friends were Jack Heaton, Charlie Martin and Harold Wilkinson.

Bristol was well visited by them, many friends made : Carnew Bros., Ernie Mathews, Harold Harding, John Cullen and Colin Bateman. Colin was always outstanding in the lengths he would go to ensure you received the best of hospitality.

Leicester, another place of great welcome at home of their good friend Walter Weston. Great wealth of lofts and good birds to be enjoyed at Leicester, Many friends here including Arthur Newton and Dr. Noble. One could go on and on. Emlyn was full of the wonderful friends gained in the world of Tippler men.

Few comments on some fanciers on the 1947 photograph. Jack Thomas, Pant y Shute, well known old fancier; Bryn Jones good show man; Norman Govier, N.T.U. Chairman, well known fancier who brought many English birds into Swansea (S. Halls and J. Cockaynes); Arthur Davies, good servant of the sport, secretary of United Welsh. Sam Buckland, flev~ Atkins birds; A, E. (`Alby') Evans, noted secretary; Monty Horrell, well liked fancier; Richard (Dick) Lewis, Jos's great friend. All are now deceased.

Cliff Carter, excellent fellow, good fancier; Ernie Burman, good fancier, ex-secretary of Welsh National; Phil Tabram, good fancier, very good knowledgeable showman, turned out some outstanding winners in his time - may he long continue.

This photograph was taken outside old Tivoli cinema, Cwmburla in Swansea. Meetings and shows were held underneath this cinema. Demolished in 1970 for road improvement.
